1. What is the difference between Tarantella, Pizzica, and Tammurriata?

While all are Southern Italian traditional dances, they have distinct rhythms and cultural significance. Tarantella is an umbrella term, often referring to a joyous, fast 6/8 and 12/8 rhythms. Pizzica is a specific, fast, and hypnotic 6/8 dance primarily from the Salento region of Puglia, historically linked to ancient healing and trance rituals related to the Tarantismo tradition. Tammurriata is a dance from the Campania region characterized by a powerful, earthy 4/4 rhythm and is historically tied to fertility rituals and the veneration of the Earth Mother.

“If anyone is looking to learn dance and folklore from Salvatore I highly recommend. As a dancer I feel like that’s one of my favorite ways to connect to the culture.”
